Extended Service/Warranty: to buy or not to buy
akirby replied to luxpow's topic in Recalls, TSBs & Warranty
Once again, it's a math problem. Ford knows how often parts will fail and how much they cost. That's already factored into the cost. If they were losing money they'd stop selling them or raise the price. If you want the lowest cost, insure yourself for anything you can afford to repair or replace. For everything else get the largest deductible you can afford. If you don't care about costs then do whatever makes you feel the best. -
Extended Service/Warranty: to buy or not to buy

Do you have a $0 deductible on your car insurance? Extended warranties are just insurance policies. You're not going to have 6-8 visits on an extended warranty. You'd trade it before you got that far. Personally I just don't understand the approach of "I'd like to spend thousands of dollars up front for something I may never use at all just so I don't have to spend hundreds down the road or an occasional few thousand dollar repair." I typically keep vehicles 5-6 years and on those vehicles I've saved well over $10K by not buying any extended warranties. I've only had a few small repairs. Even if I had to spend $4K tomorrow I look at it as I'm still $6K ahead. But I guess some people just can't stand the thought of an unexpected repair bill and don't mind wasting thousands of dollars. Now if you can't afford a large repair then you should get the extended warranty but finance it with the vehicle so you're only paying a few dollars per month. That makes sense. But if you're paying $2K cash for a warranty you can certainly afford to pay for a repair. /soapbox -
Remember the ST launched the same time as the regular models so the time was obviously compressed. Considering how many they’ve sold and that only a few enthusiasts have major complaints it was probably the right business decision. That would be a big revenue loss to delay the STs for one year.

You’re right. Stupid engineers. Fire them all.
-
Ok, whatever. I know a transmission engineer and that’s not how it works.
-
You’re assuming that they didn’t even try. It’s way way way more complicated than that. I think they had limited time to get the job done - probably 6-12 months less than they would have liked.
-
Its easy to get a tranny to shift faster. It’s hard to do it without sacrificing comfort and reliability long term. The 10 speed had issues the first year. It takes time to perfect these things in the real world. But I do think they rushed this one to market a bit.

Extended Service/Warranty: to buy or not to buy

You're always better off with the highest deductible you can afford on any insurance plan. These things are always a gamble and the odds are not in your favor over the long run. -
The Explorer ST tranny is several years old. Edge ST tranny is brand new.

It is true you have to buy the premium care ESP before the factory warranty expires. Although they might have a more expensive option after that. -
Just checked and it's 150 lb/ft on F150 regardless of wheel size. So it's stud size not wheel size, but maybe they went to larger studs to support the larger wheels (20"-22").
-
I think the larger studs and higher torque values are due to the larger wheel sizes. My F-150 only has 18” wheels. Edge can go up to 22”.
-
You can also modulate it when stopping via brake pedal pressure. Light pressure and it won’t shut off. I also shut it off via the switch if I need to turn left quickly.
-
The people who hate Auto stop start usually haven’t even given it a chance. I say leave it on for a month and you’ll forget it’s there or at least not mind it.
-
But you have to be careful. Sometimes they run rich to keep the heads cool (like most first gen ecoboosts).

Outstanding Field Service Actions 12M02 (APIM)

As stated it’s not a safety recall so it’s not automatically covered for free. There was a warranty extension but that expired so you’re on your own. -

They’re $1000 - $1500. You’ll most likely save money in the long run by not buying them if you can pay for a large repair. -
As for cruise control every modern car I’ve seen forces you to turn on cruise each time. It’s a safety feature so you don’t accidentally hit resume or set not realizing cruise was turned on. Most people don’t use cruise control every time they drive. I just hit on the. Set the first time.

All you need to do to set dual mode is change the passenger temp. You don’t need the menu.

I moved the ones I saw. If I missed one just PM me. I also made links in the engine tuning sections for the 6F55 tuning topic which I think should stay in the transmission section.

Moved to tuning section.
