Let me start by saying I have loved every second with my Edge... Onto the pain: I leased my '11 Edge Limited (Platinum White, baby!) on Thursday 3/31/2011 and not 3 days into my lease, I had an accident. Driving to Disneyland with my wife, our 2 YO daughter, wife's friend and her 2 YO daughter as well. Everything was going great, 70-75mph in the fast lane when a Highlander runs over a black metal bracket (~18" long - similar to a turbo heat shield or something) and sends it hurling at my wife in the passenger seat. With a car to my right and a wall to the left, my only option was to slow as much as I could in that instance and take the hit. The ladies were obviously freaked out by the loud smack and I went through about 24 emotions in 5 seconds (ranging from rage to thankfulness). At first, I only thought it hit the windshield and was fairly relieved and impressed by the windshield strength. BUT.....After getting to Disney, I went out and inspected it to find that it hit the hood first The ding is not too bad, and I feel that it can be fixed since its in an area that is fairly accessible from the backside. Luckily, the paint proved to be strong and resisted chipping or cracking. Overall, I impressed at the strength of the materials used to resist such an impact. Edgieguy jokes that White is the fastest color, but I'm going to say its the strongest too Here's the carnage (the black lines will buff out since its material from the metal object):

Apparently those guys don't know 6 Cylinders from 8 because the 3.7 and 3.5 use the same filter.... heck, even the Mustang uses it (both 3.7 and 5.0). (PS I know some V8's use this filter too, but its made generally for V6 applications.) I'm going to run a filter with a higher bypass setting as I live in So Cal and the cold starts are few and far between. I will stomp on the gas at a light more often than I will have cold starts, so the increased filtration pressure before bypass will make sure I'm still filtering oil at WOT. I don't like the idea of throwing unfiltered oil at the engine at WOT. Unfiltered oil during the 10 cold (real cold) starts a year, I will put up with. I think the Ford engineers made the bypass rating at 8 psi to make sure to cover the vast people in cold climates, which doesn't pertain as well to my desert climate and driving style.

125 for inserts is a pretty good price... $75 to paint them is about right... choice choices. I WAS going to put white CF Di Noc Vinyl on there... but now I'm torn.

Paint Protection/Sealants

Thanks for the insight. (to all the pro detailers) I will buy any 3M product if they make a version and won't touch the competition. Hands down, the best adhesives. Good to know that they own Meguiar's too! -
Jean stains on seats

I will concur. DO NOT USE A MAGIC SPONGE!!! If you understand that a magic sponge works on abrasion to remove surface dirt, you will see that it is a poor choice for leather. Unless you feel like prematurely wearing out your leather, I would advise to stay away. A magic sponge is nothing more that a sanding block with an amazingly high grit count that is soft to the touch. Having said that, I always start with a terry cloth towel and some distilled water and move up from there. Steam as Richy suggested or even baby wipes, but Magic Sponge Nevar! -
Thanks for the advice Richy! btw, I'm going to check out that cQuartz stuff you mentioned elsewhere. I'd like to add that an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure. One of the first things that I always do after purchasing a car with leather interior is to tint the windows. I will tint the front of the Edge's to match the rears this next weekend. (I have an estimate for $45 for the pair.) I've seen way too many seat tops that are absolutely thrashed by the sun while the back surfaces are still perfect. Another thing I also have is a good fitted windshield shade. This will protect your dash from drying out and eventually cracking. It will also keep the interior temps much lower when sitting in the sun. Of course, if you need privacy in a parking lot, it works wonders and makes your tint work even better by not letting light in :shades:

Got a pic of what you are talking about? Can you look from the inside and see any clips?

Looks like a mask and paint job. Cover the whole thing in blue painter's tape (one or two layers) , pencil in the emblem, cut it out with a razor, spray paint, let dry, carefully peel.

Another dealer that I spoke to said that it won't effect Edge as much as other models especially F-150

I haven't heard of any common issues regarding this. Any way you can get a video?

Keyless Entry Keypad System - Purpose?
cal3thousand replied to jdf77's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
Just used this feature at Disneyland. Hid my keys in the car. I've lost my keys on a ride there before (my volvo), and I will tell you it is NO fun to get back to your car from Disneyland and not have your keys. -
Most, if not every, domestic OE paint will have orange peel. That's why metallics are so popular nowadays. As Richy pointed out, the flake that they put in there breaks up the pattern. If you want a paint job that is free of orange peel, you need to get it professionally done. Where they will take the time to measure paint depth and color sand it flat and then re-clear.

If you had it, you would locate the physical buttons between the steering wheel and the headlight switch.

Sweet rides man!!! I had to get the white too....

IF YOU HAVE A 2010 LIMITED, stick with 20 INCH WHEELS!!
cal3thousand replied to peterjamesmusser's topic in Welcome Forum!
Better fuel economy from 16" but not better handling. The Edge has a 60 series profile in 18". If you went to 16" you'd need to go to 70/75 OR a skinnier tire and that won't handle better. Lower would also handle better, but that would defeat some of the benefits of a taller vehicle with more ground clearance. Air suspension could be really cool on the Edge chassis if done right. :yup: -
That was pretty hilarious
-
I totally agree. Honestly, if it were responsibly within my budget range, I would have gotten the MKX and matched the body panels and done something about that hideous grill (IMO). Maybe even swap an Edge Sport front clip onto the MKX.... that could be pretty hot.

2011 SEL front end popping noise
cal3thousand replied to lennit's topic in Brakes, Chassis & Suspension
I've heard that the chrome clads might make some noise. I would suggest recording the sound somehow (video would be even better). This way WE as well as the dealer can know what you're referring to. -
Keyless Entry Keypad System - Purpose?
cal3thousand replied to jdf77's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
I got a funny story: Last night picked up my 11 Edge Limited. Drove across the street to park at the In-N-Out, used the keypad to lock the doors..... Then realized I left the keys in the car Also didn't know the code exactly as I just got the card 10 minutes before that. Luckily the sales people were just about to leave the dealership. I caught them in the parking lot and they went back in and retrieved my code that was luckily written on my invoice. I'm really glad I made that mistake EARLY (understatement ) and will NEVER do that again since I have the code ingrained in my membrane now. I do LOVE the feature and have always wanted it (never owned a FLM) -
EcoBoost engine available and of course and minor changes as needed. MKX already has the Mustang engine and the SelectShift transmission. What else would you like to add to make it a MKX Sport? Only thing I could think of would be the 365-HP 3.5L EcoBoost from the Taurus SHO / Flex. Or are you more referring to a 'Sport' trim for looks?

I have not experienced this exact line, but one dealer tried to tell me that "all vehicles have an alarm and a battery saver", basically telling me that it was required ($397 for the alarm that costs $125 online and $187 for some mythical battery saver)... I just reiterated his sentence in a unbelieving tone and then waited for his answer... he had the audacity to tell me "yes" to my face with a smile  . That was about the beginning of the end of my dealings with him. I found another dealer that didn't play such games and leased my '11 FWD Limited. Were you or someone you know take for a ride?

The 22's are forged polished aluminum
-
Think about it. Its a FORGED 22" aluminum wheel designed for the Edge Sport and only the Edge Sport. Its all about scale. You have a production of about 10,000 sets (how many Edge sports were made?), it will cost significantly more than if you made 500,000 sets (18" painted rim shared by Edge, Fusion, Explorer etc). design, tooling (huge efforts in machinery and power required to make a forged rim versus cast), and finishing (polishing doesn't come cheap) all add to the cost of the rims. You're better off finding an aftermarket forged rim, at least you will be able to replace it more easily. I also think the Ford rims are a bit heavy for forged aluminum. Honestly, they could have made the wheels cheaper and the Sport edition faster by including a 20" standard on Sport with 22" options for BOTH Limited and Sport. (yes, i understand that high flow dampers were designed to handle the unsprung weight of the Sport)

Yes you are right about the VIN numbering. I guess there could be some still sitting on lots... but Edges average about 27 days on a dealer lot... so... I'm guessing they are getting scarce. Maybe in your area there's still quite a bit of older cars. I haven't see a definitive list of the changes between the 2 Jobs, but "less noisy" mirrors have been confirmed by observation.

I haven't drive my Edge much yet but... My previous was a Volvo 850 turbo. Awesome car, but heavy.... actually heavier than the Edge with less HP and torque. (They'd probably tie in a race to 1/4mi due to the torque band of the turbo). Anyways, I'm very impressed with the Edge Ti-VCT engine's power and efficiency. I caught myself going 80 and it really felt like 70 or less, I probably averaged 75mph on my 25mi trip home from the dealership (first drive) and returned 20+ mpg. This also included quite a bit of idle time when I was showing off my ride to my cousin. All in all, I'm super happy about the car including its MPG (I'm sure it will get even better) coupled with the fact that it does this all on 87 octane. (91 required/93 preferred for the turbo)
