Wheel Size? 17, 18 and now 20 inch wheels
jeffreybehr replied to Smiley's topic in Audio, Backup, Navigation & SYNC
I'm no engineer, but I can think of a couple reasons for wider tires. One is increased traction. Another is different appearance, and I think this is why most of us choose them. My barber just this afternoon asked me why I put aftermarket tires on all my vehicles. 'Becaue they look better' I told him. When I was searching for aftermarket tires, I specificaly excluded those with tread patterns similar to the boring-to-me ones of the original tires. I too calculate carefully tire sizes so I don't change the diamter (more than a couple percent, which is how different the original 17- and 18-inch tires are in diameter). My choice is the 275/45-20, which is the same diameter as the original 245/60-18 (?), and here's my choice of tire and wheel. I don't know, but I suspect that the increase in rolling resistance is so small to be effectively unmeasurable. -
Splash guards are molded into the rear lower body panel. Here's member Good_Hands's pic of his Hankook 275/45-20 tire.

Maintenance schedule? For instance, oil and filter changes?
jeffreybehr replied to jeffreybehr's topic in Mods & Tech
Found the schedules, finally, at Ford. They sure don't make it easy, but that's true of FAR-too-many sites. -
If I loved whiskey, I too would love my still. :yup:

Marv, I don't own one yet but I've driven 4. One thing I love about them is their willingness to downshift to the lowest-practicable gear when the throttle is stomped. (It's sort of like my Porsche Cayenne Turbo that way.) 265 horsepower actually isn't much to pull around 4200 - 4500 pounds (plus people and cargo), so getting the revs up to around where the maximum horsepower is developed is necessary. Your 26MPG with only 1300 miles on it is GOOD news.
-
28MPG...great news, edge.

Good, determining how big the tires are is NOT a problem; I can do that in about 10 seconds with a calculator. Do you know the particulars of your wheels, as in width, backspace/offset, etc.? And the 275/45-20s are indeed almost the exact diameter of the 245/60-18s, but of course they're 1.2" WIDER, and the wheels could put them in harm's way, so to speak. That's why I'd like to have your wheel info.

More news. I've read about the TPM sensors and that they're reusable with a new band, but no one has written that to reuse them, one needs not only a new band but also a new sensor 'body'. At least that's what Brandon at The Tire Rack tells me; they sell the combination for $55 per wheel. Anyone done this?

I've chosen a 20" tire and wheel for my not-yet-ordered AWD Edge, but I'd like to test fit one before I order 4 of them. I'm just stupid enough to order one-each tire and wheel to see how the combination fits and looks. See http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=889 for the 20X9" ASA wheel and either General or Hankook 275/45-20 tire. Any takers? I would do all the work; all you do is bring your Edge to north-central Phoenix and watch. Gorgeous, huh!?!?

One thing I know without owning one--I've driven 4 now, 3 FWDs and 1 AWD. The FWDs suffered from a bit of torque steer while the AWD did NOT. So I think the torque-distribution system is indeed tied to the entire engine-management system, and when one stomps the throttle, the coupler delivers more torque to the rear. I like it.

Good_Hands: "I went with the Hankooks. Of course, Memphis has both M and S so it is a good fit for me." Indeed. I find these Hankooks to be very high in traction, wet and dry, and low in noise, the latter especially compared with their precessors, Toyo Proxes STs. The Hankooks didn't have much traction in packed snow, but only chains do. :yup: So how 'bout some pics of your Hankooked Edge?

Initially I thought I'd get the fabulous-looking Nitto 420 in 255/55-18... ...on the 18X9" ROH Drift-R... ...but I then decided to get a little more aggressive in tire choice. Since it's easy to find tires that are too big (IMO) for this vehicle, thereby raising the already high final gearing, I decided to stay with a tire in the 29"-diameter range. But first, a wheel. The ASA JH8 in 20X9" with black center... ...really appeals to me (I HATE chromed light-alloy wheels; all of them including Ford's look garish to me). $234 at Tire Rack... http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results.jsp...autoModClar=AWD Turns out a 275/45-20 tire is about 29.7" tall (v. the original's 29", only 2.4% higher), and I found not only the Hankook Ventus RH06, my current choice on the Cayenne Turbo... ...but also the General Grabber UHP... While I'd prefer a nondirectional tire like the Nitto, spending $30 to get 2 remounted and balanced every 6 months or so* is a small price to pay for being happy with one's tires and getting high mileage from them. BTW, prices are quite reasonable IMO for these; the Nitto is $126 and the Hankook $133 at Discount Direct; the General only $109 and the ASA 20X9" wheel $234 (closeout) at Tire Rack. (The custom-specified 20X10", 3-piece wheels for the Cayenne cost almost $1000 EACH!) WARNING--these Nitto and General tires are both summer tires, while the Hankook is rated M&S. 'Summer' tires do NOT perform well in cold/freezing weather, but since Phoenix NEVER has winter weather, only summer and nonsummer weather, this is not a concern for me. It is for those of you living in the snowbelt. * Generally, I rotate tires, one position clockwise, and change oil every 6 months.

edge22", please QUIT TEASING US and post a link on what you bought, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An edges-only grille is definitely on my list--I love the looks of the Edge but not the massiveness of the 3-bar grille.

dbe: " My advise (sic) is just lay off the gas, there is nothing to prove..." Indeed. I wrote in another thread that our fuel consumption is directly proportional to our right-foot pressure on the throttle. Getting good fuel mileage is a learned skill that most of us have little of. Your news is still encouraging. Thx.

GREAT news, dbe. About how fast do/did you drive? FWD or AWD?

What kind of people are Edge fans

berryEDGEie, if you know or anyone knows where to buy that billet grille you mentioned, pls post it here. I've been searching, unsuccesfully. -
Speaking of color, mine will be Red Fire, my 1st red car since 1963. And about BAMRs, they'd have to pay me to have one and I still wouldn't accept the vehicle. But I'm glad you 2 love yours.

OK, folks, what's a BAMR?

Porsche Cayene Turbo owner switching to Edge...

None. I've asked at least two Germans if they thought that term was derogatory, and both said no. They said about every nationality has a nickname--Yanks, Limeys, Frogs--and terms like those are just harmless parts of the language. However, I'm sorry if I offended you. Akirby, GREAT response. I'm glad a pic I intended to be cute generated a laugh. Robert, TYVM. That pic was taken on Engineer Pass Rd., just e. of US550, s. of Ouray. It's the north end of what Colorado now calls something like the Alpine Scenic Trail, the south end of which is at Silverton; perhaps a Coloradon will confirm/correct that. I did several fall-color trips to southwestern CO and got some fabulous images; see some here... http://community.webshots.com/user/jeffreybehr .
