Norm would that not deaden the sound and muffle it? mine will not get that dirty, I keep my car pretty clean and not exposed to that much dust/debris where I live/drive. never even thought about it before as I think it is a losing proposition as in the end, there are still enough holes, it will get in. Lex, every time you wash your car or when it rains, water gets in the doors. There are drain holes at the bottom of the door to let it out. The back of your speakers are directly expose to that water/moisture/dirt. Of course, the door volume acts like a large encloser for your speakers. That how you got better bass response from your after market speakers. Norm
Lex Talionis
yep, familiar with drain holes... but, don't you think the speakers sit high enough as to not actually get exposed to water in any way in that scenario? But, I feel your overall point, but not one I would personally worry much about - at least not enough to try to protect them beyond how they are now. I will be curious to see what you come up with for an exclosure, and if you use the parted out stock enclosure, seems you got the skills to make something usable for your need. Tribby2001
There you go. Sonavox crossover 4" mid speaker 1.5" tweeter Fully sealed encloser. My 2010 Edge Limited does not have these Premium speakers. All four of my Premium door speakers are open-air types. There is no enclosure on the back of the speakers (see attached photos). Additionally, my rear door Premium speakers are 6x8" integrated 2-ways. Not seperate mid-range/tweeter as shown in your photos. My front door Premium speakers are also 6x8" single mid-range with seperate tweeters in the A-pillar. L1TECH
Ok now I am confused. I have the NAV and the premium audio in my 2010 SEL and yet I DO NOT HAVE A-PILLAR TWEETERS. Do the a-pillar tweeters only come in the Limited and Sport and the SEL with premium audio gets the door midrange/tweeter???

L1TECH
Thanks that clears it up. I wonder if moving the tweeters up really makes that much of a difference? I guess when I change the speakers I'll play with tweeter positioning adn see what sounds best to me.
MacLeod
Moving the tweeter up to the A pillars makes a pretty noticeable difference. Higher frequencies are very directional and the ones the tweeters play are like laser beams. Also with those frequencies, the more on axis they are increases their intensity. So the tweeters in the left door down low and at nearly 90 degrees off axis, are much more muted than the ones across from you at only 20 degrees off axis. By moving them up to the A pillars, you can angle them in more which helps their sound even out more. The biggest advantage to moving them up is in raising the soundstage. Higher frequencies are what your brain keys on for imaging cues. Almost all voices and instruments have mid AND high frequencies so when a guitar string is plucked, the brain keys in on the high frequencies coming from the A pillars and "sees" the image at eye level as opposed to down in your lap. Do NOT put an enclosure around your aftermarket speakers. First off, theyre designed to work in free air. Boxing them in with a tiny enclosure like that will drastically choke off the sound especially in the low end. Youll kill your midbass response. Secondly, dont worry about the elements. Aftermarket car speakers are designed to withstand some moisture. Heck, a lot of them can be used on boats! Thats why theyre cones are NOT made out of paper nor are the surrounds. Theyre made out of polypropolyne (Im sure I misspelled that LOL) and rubber which is very durable and so long as youre not turning a garden hose on them, dont worry about them.
