Did a +1 back in ’85 & dealer who wouldn’t sell something unless it was pretty much spot on has retired. A lot can happen in 24 years & I may be a little outa’ the loop. When looking for new wheels & tires, what are spec limits? For instance, my Edge uses wheel with 40mm offset. I’m looking at wheel with 38mm, which means it “sticks out” (boy that sounds technical) an extra 2 mm. Edge wheel is 7.5” wide. So an 8” wheel will add another ¼’ (6.35mm) to the 2mm for a total of 8.35mm or about 5/16”. Any problem with my math? Problems with that amount of “stick-out?” I see no rubbing or bearing load of consequence & I do have mud flaps. What say the members? Wheel this be OK? If I go to tire/wheel dealer website & plug in ’07 Edge, AWD, 18” (have 17s now) can I trust that site will return only wheels for my car? Other seasoned geezers & I are of an age & from a time when we "didn't need no stinking" TPMS. Heck, we still have & use tire gages. I’ve been checking tire air for twice as long as some of U'all been breathing air. :yup: What happens if I buy new set wheels & tires, but choose not to spring for TMPS bands, cradles, transmitters, etc? (After all, I am on a fixed income.) :shades: Will I be pestered with all sorts of bells, buzzers, whistles & warnings from the air Nazi? Seems I read somewhere dealer can shut off TPMS, but that doesn’t seem correct since we’re dealing with a NHTSA :stop: safety feature.. Edge184 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Share Posted April 20, 2009 Well, I just put 20's on my Edge from 18"s. The straps from the 18's would not fit on the 20's so I opted not to put them in. After driving for a while a message came up on the message center sayin tire pressure error. I just hit the reset button and that went away but the idiot light on the dash stays on. I really do not care about that. But I think I will get the bigger straps and have them installed. I don't know your answer to the 38mm wheel and how far it would stick out or if your math if correct. But to tell you My wheels are 38mm offset and they do not stick out. THe tires are 265/45R20. I can't answer your size questions but when swapping wheels and you have TPMS, all you have to do is buy the bands and the garage that is swapping out the wheels will be able to transfer the other components of TPMS to the new bands. I will provide a website that I bought my bands from. I think I paid $70. It is worth it just to buy the bands, let the service garage do their thing and you still have the TPMS working for you. See, what did I just say? Hi dadrett. :D Use this "Wheel Offset Tool" - LINK: Wheel Offset Tool to see what the exact size changes will be concerning changing wheel and offsets. Simply input the old and new wheel information. You will not have any problems with the specs you mentioned (lot of room in the wheelwells of these vehicles), but instead of taking the word of Internet strangers (like us :shades: ), check with the experts before you buy anything. I can not speak for all Wheel and Tire Retailer Websites, but if you go to "The Tire Rack" - LINK: The Tire Rack or Discount Tire - LINK: Discount Tire those sites will not steer you wrong. Of course, there are other good Retailers and websites, but I can not vouch for them. Concerning your new wheels and TPMS. There is no way to currently turn off the TPMS system, and if there was, it is doubtful that most Dealers would turn it off, due to Federal Law and the legal ramifications. As msgtia stated, if you do not plan on using your old wheels as "winter wheels", have the tire shop remove your old TPMS sensors and reinstall/reprogram them on the new wheels. You would simply need to purchase new bands, which are inexpensive. In this way, you will not have the aggravation of TPMS warning lights and messages. If I missed anything, let me know. I shall take U'r reply under advisement. 4-21-09 - Using U'r Wheel Offset Tool, I get a return of "Outer Position: EXTEND an extra 8mm (position of the outside edge of the wheel). That's only .3 mm (14 thousandths) less than my calculation. Close enuf! :yup: Hey!, EXTEND is word I wanted for "stick out" & I guess EXTENSION is word for "stick-out." Wheels are 18", 10 spoke, silver Enkei J10s. Nice moderate wheel with sort of classic :shades: simplicity. A family member & a friend lobbied for black. When I was 44, I did +1 with black Enkeis on '85 Escort. Now I'm 1/2 again older, more conservative & feel I should project more refined image. :hysterical2: Tires are 245/60-18 Michelen Latitude Tour HPs. Seem to have good specs @ reasonable price AND :happy feet: a $70 rebate. Got another $100 off for financing @ 0% for 12 months. Put my 17” wheels & tires on Craigslist, then was looking thru ads & what do I find? The wheel I had wanted, but didn’t try hard enuf to find. ’08, 18”, Premium Painted (charcoal) WITH TPMS sensors. $200.00 the set. Too late for me, but if U live in SF Bay area & are interested, call him @ 650-619-1902. He’s had them up for a month. His ad isn't very good. dadrett Posted May 14, 2009 Author Report Share Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) Wheels & tires installed 5-12-09. Started process 4-21. One wheel came in, but was damaged. Ordered replacement. Meanwhile 3 wheels arrived, but no replacement. Left town for a week. Phone message 5-11: wheel coming from Texas would be here 5-12. Three weeks to the day. In the meantime, kid who wanted my old wheels/tires on Craigslist changed his mind. America’s Tire gave me $200 credit for them. So all told, my cost $1299.24. BTW, bands for sensors were $40/set. PS: Michelin Latitude Tour HP is $100 more at COSTCO. 5-18-09 -- I've discovered an unexpected consequence - speedometer is now spot on w/TomTom real time MPH..
